This maquette helped me figure out how to lay the shadows on the curving stairs in my painting, The Way Between. Originally I thought I'd show the stairs descending down further under the water, so I built it down as well as up, and even shot photos of the sculpture in a swimming pool! ⠀⠀

Now it lives on my shelf, and its cracking and sagging a bit under its own weight. It's a good thing I'm not a sculptor! ⠀⠀

Sometimes I struggle with ideas and sketches that I am fond of, but I worry aren’t clever or interesting enough to warrant multiple weeks-worth of effort to paint...and on the flip side I then worry that I’m leaving too much behind in the pursuit of finding the “right painting” to paint. I wonder if other people experience this too.
I’m finding these mini paintings, which take less than 10% of the time as my other painting, are really great for trying out an idea without the commitment I’d normally put in for careful reference, repeated tweaking of the composition, and working more carefully and iteratively.

Before starting this painting, I tried a few new things out in black & white ink so I wasn’t doing anything new on the final piece. I prefer doing a few run-throughs in rehearsal before starting the real thing! .

These 2d designs differ a lot when made into a dome shape! Dry erase turned out to be a good way to test drive them...the ones I liked flat are no good and the ones I didn’t are working surprisingly well. #artprocess #patterndesign #houstonartists
