Celestial Garden

For all the harms of our technological age, greater connectivity and access to others around the world has the potential to improve our ability to empathize with others across language barriers and great distances. As communities grow and interconnectivity improves, we are better able to care about others’ needs outside our immediate family, local community, and even our continent. This often seems counterbalanced by the ills of the online world, but the potential is there.

What potential would there be, were humanity to embrace this ability as a responsibility to one another? As technology assists our study in bioacoustics and dramatically shifts what we know about non-human life on earth, what responsibility might that bestow? I hope it is the privilege to be custodian and conservator.
