A candle-lit path leads up through the snow as the dawn breaks.

Warmth of Winter

The winter solstice, when the sun travels the lowest and shortest path of the year, after which the increasing cold reverses and begins to recede, has been celebrated for over ten thousand years. People come together to endure the transition from increasing night to increasing day, bringing their own warmth and light. Long, dark hours, flickering candlelight, and ghost stories have lent a magical feeling to this time of year.

This holiday has evolved, picking up new traditions and sometimes forgetting older ones as it has been appropriated by various faiths and cultures through time, but it persists. When we participate, regardless of what name it wears, we participate in something ancient.
