A candle-lit stairway leads out into a moonlit deep snow, under a barren tree, toward the moon.

Leave-Taking

I am dumbfounded by the strange beauty, terrifying inhospitality, and humbling immensity of the "everything else" that is space. There is a lot of overlap with that and what a wintery scene holds. While a winter wonderland lacks the expansiveness and sense of potential of the stars, they both are dangerous and stunning environments where we venture out of our comfort zone. We have to prepare to survive in either, and upon entering this quiet place, the clock begins ticking...you don't belong here.

Snow and ice are a lesser extreme than space, of course. The snow and winter is often contrasted with indulgent warmth (in closeness with loved ones, in hot drinks and comfy sweaters, in the company of fire and candlelight), to an extent that thoughts of snow and cold are often inseparable from these contrary things we find joy in.

What would you venture out and leave your comfort zone for?
